Director

Boris M. Vladimirski
In 1965, Boris M. Vladimirski received his Bachelor's in computer science from Novocherkassk Polytechnic Institute, located in the historic city of Novocherkassk 20 miles north of Rostov. Upon graduation, he was accepted to the Bionics program at the Human and Animal Physiology Department of the Graduate School at Rostov State University. Ever after, his life became unalienably connected to the University. In 1970, he successfully defended his dissertation and received a Candidate of Science degree (an approximate equivalent of a Ph.D. in the Russian system of higher education). After that, he got a joint appointment with the Department as a researcher and a faculty member. This path has led him from a beginner assistant lecturer to a senior lecturer to a full professor in 1994. In 1983, Boris M. Vladimirski switched to the newly opened Research Institute for Neurocybernetics at Rostov State University, where he consecutively held the posts of the Head of Experimental Data Analysis Methods Lab (1983-present), the Deputy Director for Research (1988-1995), and the Director (1995-present). His scientific achievements include more than 90 publications, among which "Mathematical Methods in Biology" (1983), accepted as an official textbook for all Russian university biology students by the Russian State Ministry of Education, and "The Functional State of a Human Operator: Estimation and Prognosis" (1988, co-authored with A.B. Kogan), published in the prestigious "Problems of the Space Biology" series by the "Nauka" ("Science") federal publishing house. In 1993, he had also defended his Doctor of Science Dissertation entitled "An EEG-Based Estimation of the Functional State of a Human Operator" at Moscow State University. In 1995, he became a member of the International Academy of Sciences. A best evidence of his scientific accomplishments is his being a member of the Supreme All-Russian Biological Sciences Council, which is the main and the most prestigious organization in the country that has the right to confer Doctor of Science degrees. Besides, he is a member of the Russian Physiological Society. More than 30 years of teaching experience had resulted in his winning as a principal author the Federal Textbook Grant (together with Professors Ya.M.Yerusalimski and A.B.Gorstko of the RSU Math Department) in 1995 to write an official textbook on mathematics for science, but not math, students. In 1995, Boris M. Vladimirski become the first Chair of the newly opened Department of Biophysics and Biocybernetics at the University. His main research interests include, but are not limited to, bioelectrical signals analysis, pattern recognition, methods for estimation and prognosis of the functional state of a human operator, "biological" time modeling.
